How Looks Like CNC Machining Surface Textures?
CNC machining surface textures are very important to our product. Since there are numerous surface techniques in manufacturing companies that have been applied during product development. As a client, you need to specify your requirements on the surface texture and the production technique. You would like to assist its duties and tailoring to meet your objectives. In this blog, we will discuss some of the most common production techniques that will lead to the production of a product with a specified surface texture. The surface textures with CNC machining will be different according to the production technique used.
Below are different CNC machining process and finishing standard
The common RA levels and values
Surface texture depicted by the level of smoothness or roughness of various surfaces. RA values are used to show the different levels of surface texture. RA Levels contain multiple values calculated in the form of surface roughness average quantified microscopic peaks and valleys.
Different machining finishing methods are suitable for the different values of RA. Knowledge of the manufacturing processes that produce specific RA values is vital when making various designs. The RA value of 1.6 is suitable for manufacturing processes such as sawing, shaping, drilling, and electrical discharge machining,
Boring and turning are manufacturing processes that produce an RA value of 0.4. The RA value of 0.8 is suitable for a wide range of operations which include; milling, broaching, reaming, laser, die casting, among others. A client with knowledge of these RA values will help the manufacturer tailor his requirements to meet his surface texture needs.
The production processes include the following
CNC Milling Machining
CNC machining involves a subtractive process, and thus CNC milling consists of the rotation of the cutting tool on its spindle and reduces the material to get final product shapes (included metal or plastic materials).
As the milling action takes place, the cutting tool rotates fast, leaving behind some fine scratches formed with a pattern that corresponds to the rotation of the cutting tool. The engineers can creatively refine the scratch pattern and come up with unique textural effects by using a different cutting tool or by changing the speed and the depth of the cut. The CNC machine used should be rigid with a high level of precision if the best results are expected. Most CNC milling gives a surface Ra of 0.8-1.6.
CNC Turning Machining
The cutting tool is stationary as the workpiece, which is mounted on a chuck continuously rotate. CNC turning creates a regular pattern on the workpiece. CNC turning is also an excellent method used by engineers and designers to develop circular features such as threaded holes, grooves, and stepped diameters.
Compared CNC turning and CNC milling difference is the cutting tool rotates in CNC milling against a stationary workpiece in CNC turning, the cutting tool is stable against a rotating workpiece mounted on a chuck. With the right cutting tool, it is possible to have a surface Ra of 0.4. The surface texture of CNC turning differs considerably from that of CNC milling as it appears to be smoother due to its closely spaced pattern of scratches.
CNC Grinding Machining
CNC grinding process involves the movement of a grinding wheel against a rigid workpiece. The grinding wheel removes the pattern from the surface, making it uniform. The best grinding should have a surface texture of Ra0.05 or mirror subject to excellent cutting speed and grinding lubricant. CNC grinding is ideal for flat surfaces and produces the smoothest surface texture.
Chemical Photo- Etching
Chemical photo etching is a subtractive production process that utilizes high temperature under a controlled environment to selectively remove materials for the production of top precision metal parts of various shapes. Chemical photo etching can be used in the design of a specific pattern.
EDM/Wire EDM
Electric discharge machining or EDM is a technique in machining that uses a special wire responsible for cutting metal material that conducts electricity. The cable facilitates cutting even in corners since it cuts without contact.
Furthermore, the other types of surface texture finishing include; bead blasting hand sanding and aqua blasting. Creatingway will take more blog to share the information for customers.
